The North Dakota Input-Output model has been used extensively to analyze changes in the state's economy. Within the past decade, exported services (e.g., telemarketing, data processing, reservation and financial centers) have become an important component of the North Dakota economic base. The purpose of this report is to estimate the contribution of exported services firms to the economic base (sales for final demand) of North Dakota and of regions and counties within the state, for 1998 and 1999. Exported services sales for final demand in 1999 totaled $348 million statewide, or almost 3 percent of the state's economic base. Regions 5, 2, and 7 had the largest contributions from exported services activities, which amounted to 6 percent of total sales... |

This study examines the economic impacts that have resulted from new or recently expanded North Dakota firms in three sectors (agricultural processing, other manufacturing, and exportable services), addressing such dimensions as number of jobs created, compensation paid to employees, and the expenditures made to entities within the local area and elsewhere in the state. Information was obtained from a questionnaire completed by 42 new or recently expanded firms. The responding firms had added an average of 29 jobs from 1990 to 1996. General labor was the job category accounting for the largest number of workers overall (52 percent), followed by skilled labor (16 percent) and management (12 percent). About 65 percent of the firms' new jobs have been... |

Production agriculture in the 4-state area of southwestern North Dakota, southeastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming and northwestern South Dakota has faced serious economic challenges. In the mid-1990's, a growing number of recreational land buyers purchased land for wildlife habitat and hunting, rather than for farm derived income. A survey of the area was done to determine land ownership characteristics, information about land that was rented and leased out, and attitudes toward key issues facing landowners and farm and ranch operators. The average landowner owned 3,089.4 acres comprised mainly of pastureland/rangeland (2,242.6 acres) and cropland (473.3 acres). Ownership of farmland was primarily from purchases (70.6 percent) and inheritance (26.1... |

The economic base of North Dakota and its eight substate regions has changed over the past couple of decades. This report takes an in-depth look at the economic base for each of these areas over the 1958-1984 period. Each of the regions has a unique composition of basic activities that have been responsible for its growth. Natural resource related activities, either in the form of agricultural or energy production, have been the largest source of real economic growth within the state. The purpose of this report is to identify the components of the economic base at substate levels and to show the changes in relative composition for these activities. Price and production data are presented to support and explain the changes that have occurred. |
